Under Watchful Eye, Carter Popejoy, 2025, Digital Photography
Under Watchful Eye is a piece that, while spur of the moment, had been in the back of my head for quite a while. When I was first starting out in photography, I was really drawn to the film-esque style of Gregory Crewdson, with my introduction to his work being the cover of Yo La Tengo’s 2000 album And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside-Out. I wanted to try and capture the feelings that that image gives me, the feeling of existing somewhere “in-between.” Quite a few times in my young life now, I have often felt that I’m in a state of limbo, not being able to move on to….whatever’s next (I feel like I’m in one again now as of writing this). To be able to capture that and explore those feelings in the frozen wastes that have been Kansas this winter has been cold and a bit isolating at times, but it has also felt free. Out in the cold winter’s night free from whatever has burdened me that day and what may burden the day that lies ahead of me. Maybe this image, and others from the project, can do the same for you too.
